About
Isabelle Halmos is a 2021 graduate of Drawing and Painting from OCAD University, completing her Bachelor degree in Fine Arts in Toronto where she was born and raised. She is aiming to become a practicing visual artist, and eventually work as an art restorer and conservationist for private and public art collections.
Her attention to detail gained from years of photorealistic commissioned sketch work is apparent as she turns photographs and live subjects into drawings or paintings. Her current work focuses on issues of body and gender as well as sexual assault/harassment which she achieves through paintings and installation work. Her art is mostly figurative, combining her hyper-realism with abstract principles.

Isabelle Halmos, "Embedded", 2019. Acrylic on wood and masonite panels, pillows, polyester pillow cases and sheet, 4 x 5 1/2 feet. Embedded is an interactive multimedia sculpture about the sexual harassment and assault stories women carry with them everyday. The sculpture loosely resembles a bed, the place where a lot of sexual assault occurs, but is only recognizable because of the pillows and sheet. The panels that make up the structure are covered in stories of my friends' and family's sexual assault stories because I wanted them to be real stories and since every woman has a story, every woman I know would have one. I wanted to use the sheet to act as a trigger warning to the intense content and so the audience has to get close to the artwork in order to read. By the audience needing to move the sheet around to read the stories, it makes them feel as though they're invading their privacy and makes the viewer uncomfortable. This uncomfortability begins the conversation about sexual assault and harassment and how often it happens. How it has happened to every woman and if it hasn't, it will. I painted my own stories on the pillows and covered them with pillow cases to conceal my stories from the world, and also to make the viewer want to read it more. It makes the piece personal to me since it not only features the stories of my friends but also my own, and makes it relatable to the female viewers who have stories as well.
